SISU#LikeaGirl 2017 – Who Wants to go Down Under? APPLY NOW

Coming off a successful 2016, SISU#LikeaGirl is ready to tackle 2017.

In late 2014, following World’s Toughest Mudder, and numerous conversations about the lack of female representation at obstacle course races and endurance events, an idea was born.  Create a team of amazing women and have them travel the globe representing Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) and Endurance Events.  Witness the birth of SISU#LikeaGirl!  A few comments to some friends and the team was quickly brought together.

SISU#LikeaGirl - Toughest 24hr Xtreme

Having finished 3rd at the Toughest 24hr in 2015 and 2nd and 3rd at the Rat Race Dirty Double in 2016, SISU#LikeaGirl has set its eyes set on Australia and the True Grit Enduro 24hr.  We know that a team of four amazing women intent on showcasing what women working together can accomplish is ready to take on the world – quite literally!

The inaugural event was chosen to be Toughest 24hr Xtreme…Europe’s first 24hr OCR.  Held in Solvalla, Stockholm in Sweden on June 27, 2015, and produced by the respected Toughest race series, the race was held on a 1km track with 10 obstacles and was a brutal assault on the mind and body.  I don’t think a single hand emerged unscathed.  The team was not 100% healthy at the time of competition, but SISU is about persevering, pushing through your lowest lows and banding together with brethren when you think you have nothing left in the tank.  The inaugural team was composed of Amie “LiveWire” Booth, Leah Erickson, Morgan McKay, and Danielle Ross.  They battled bronchitis, hypothermia, fatigue, and were even down to 9 arms between them, as Amie ran the entire race with her left arm strapped to her chest, due to a pre-existing injury.  These women fought – shared – laughed – helped – taught – cried!  You see – Europe had never seen an endurance race like this. I think the ladies will agree, the camaraderie and friendship born beneath the rollers and Dry Robes, whilst sharing Epic Bars and Honey Badger hydration was worth it all!

SISU#LikeaGirl - Rat Race

The 2016 SISU#LikeaGirl team was initially comprised of Amy Palmiero-Winters, Camille McCue, Kristy Johnson-McBride, and Brenna “Red Beast” Calvert.  Again, life intervened and Amy and Camille were not able to participate, and our alternate wasn’t able to get time off work, so Amie Booth stepped in (despite still recovering from shoulder reconstruction) and she, along with Kristy Johnson-McBride and Brenna Calvert, took on the Rat Race Dirty Double – 40 miles and 400 obstacles of awesome (including the world’s longest monkey bars).  Brenna had never taken on an event of this length, and Kristy (a seasoned endurance racer) made sure that Brenna succeeded…which is exactly what SISU#LikeaGirl is all about.  Kristy and Brenna crossed the finish line together in a tie for 2nd place (also 2nd place for females in the history of the race).  Amie, finished the Full Mucker taking first in her age group, despite restrictions due to injury.

SISU#LikeaGirl - Kristy and Brenna 2nd Place at Rat Race

This brings me to today.  SISU#LikeaGirl isn’t about these amazing women.  It’s about ALL women!  Each year, the previous years’ teams will pick their replacements…and it’s that time. We’ve picked the venue – True Grit Enduro 24hr (team) in Hawkesbury River, New South Wales, Australia,  June 10, 2017, benefiting Legacy Australia and Commando Welfare Trust. 24 hrs as a team, relay style, on military inspired obstacles down under.  Now, we just need to pick the team. INTERESTED?

How to Apply:
Send an email to [email protected] telling SISU#LikeaGirl about yourself.

  • Why do you want to be on team SISU#LikeaGirl?
  • What is your race resume?
  • What does SISU mean to you?
  • Anything else you want to tell the team.

You must have or be able to obtain a passport for international travel (unless you live in Australia, then you obviously don’t need a passport).
Fundraising is a large part of the process and you must be willing to participate.

Applications are due December 15, 2017. The decision will be made on December 20, 2016 – SO DON’T DELAY!!

SISU#LikeaGirl might start for you as one event, but it’ll change your life.

WTM Preview…Here’s What We (don’t?) Know

WTM 2016 - Operation is teed upWTM is only 2 weeks away, and with November 12th rapidly approaching, the World’s Toughest Mudder Community is hungry for information…we aren’t close friends with patience. Since the Las Vegas Tough Mudder is this weekend (October 29-30), I seized the opportunity to do some investigating on behalf of all the restless WTMers who are anxious to feed the anticipation monster.

Revelation #1
The Pit will be in the same location as the previous 2 years. It’s convenient, flat, and easy for planning and staging.

Revelation #2
The course will be 5 miles long…not surprising, it was in the rules. However, they are hiring an independent company to measure and certify the length of the course. $100,000 is a lot of money at stake and lessons have been learned.

Revelation #3
There will be 3 obstacles at WTM from the Tough Mudder Obstacle Innovation Lab. No – I can’t tell you which ones, but you probably know someone who was at the Innovation Lab…pick his or her brain. Arctic Enema 3.0 was the only Innovation obstacle on the Las Vegas TM course and construction was attentive to performance of the obstacle and obtaining feedback from racers.  This, of course, does not mean Arctic Enema 3.0 will be on the WTM course.

WTM 2016 - Arctic Enema 3.0 (Feel the Burn)...will it make an appearance?

Revelation #4
Expect the registration and pit assignment process to be more regulated and monitored. The past two years have caused TMHQ a lot of headaches in this area, and they are looking to make the process more controlled. We’ll know specifics on Wednesday, November 2, when the official athlete guide is released.

Revelation #5
There will be at least one (possibly 2) never before constructed, seen, or tested obstacle(s) at WTM. Read this as mad scientists on the loose for the next 2 weeks at Lake Las Vegas (my words, not TMHQ’s). TMHQ always brings their A game to WTM, and Eli Hutchison has a lot of people to please: Will Dean, CBS, and the WTM Community. Brady Archer left some big shoes to fill as far as WTM is concerned. Eli has always been involved, but it’s been Brady’s ballgame the last 3 years…Eli is certainly preparing to pitch a no hitter.

Revelation #6
Water crossings/submersions should be about the same as WTM 2015. Certainly no water crossings any longer than what we’ve seen in the past.  WHEW!!!!

WTM 2016 - THE CLIFF - Look out below

Lastly, TMHQ wants to honor the camaraderie of Tough Mudder and World’s Toughest Mudder. Everyone should be ready…because the race doesn’t start until November 12, but that doesn’t mean TMHQ isn’t coming for you sooner.

Tough Mudder #ObstacleWeek – No. 1: Block Ness Monster

It’s no surprise that Block Ness Monster has taken the No. 1 spot for Tough Mudder’s #ObstacleWeek. Officially debuting at World Toughest Mudder 2015 (beta runs occurred throughout 2015 at a few local TM events), Block Ness Monster (then called Roll the Dice) was an instant hit. At an event where teamwork and camaraderie are valued above course time and Mudders pledge to help fellow Mudders complete the course, Block Ness Monster is a dream obstacle…and it’s hella fun! Everyone is instantly enchanted with all Block Ness has to offer.

Block Ness Monster is so simple in its ideology: jump in water, get over multiple spinnable blocks, climb free. Yet, it takes effective communication with fellow Mudders to coordinate adequate pushing and pulling of the blocks to transfer Mudders only 1-3 at a time over the blocks – too many people trying to go over at once and your done for, not enough people to help spin the block and it’s into the depths for ya.  Laughing will happen.  The volunteers usually will help with communication – let’s face it, social media has made us all averse to face to face communications.  Laugh, push, pull, have fun, challenge yourself…it’s what Tough Mudder is all about.

Tough Mudder #ObstacleWeek – No. 2: King of the Swingers

Fan favorite #2 for Tough Mudder’s #ObstacleWeek, King of the Swingers, is a realtively new Tough Mudder obstacle introduced at World’s Toughest Mudder 2014 that instantly earned its place in Mudder hearts. King of the Swingers continued to receive rave reviews through the 2015 Tough Mudder season, so it’s no surprise it landed at #2 on the #obstacleweek list.

King of the Swingers is a hybrid skill/fear obstacle that pairs the fear of heights (ala Walk the Plank) with the skill of the flying trapeze, all with the end goal of ringing the sought after bell.  Tough Mudder continues to refine this obstacle, adjusting the height and distance of said bell at different events to keep Mudders in the air, so to speak.  King of the Swingers is a spectator favorite and guaranteed to produce copious numbers of expletives and rowdy celebration.  World’s Toughest Mudder 2015 had King of  the Swingers rewarding successful racers with golden carabiners that could be exchanged for an advantage elsewhere on the course.  The bell tolls for Mudders!

For tips on training for and flying on King of the Swingers, check out the Tough Mudder website. Which obstacle will be voted #1?
